4. Confirm the court and case category.A result may concern an estate, guardianship, name change, trust, minor settlement or another probate proceeding. Match the name and identifying information before proceeding.
5. Read the available docket entries.Look for applications, appointments, court orders, inventories, accounting entries, hearings or other public case activity.
6. Request official documentation when necessary.Write down the exact case number and document title. Ask the Probate Court for a certified copy if the record will be used for an official transaction.

Why might a recent case be missing?

The court’s record-search disclaimer warns of a delay between filing or judicial action and when a record becomes available online. That delay may be at least 24 hours and sometimes longer. A missing recent entry should be checked directly with the court when timing matters.

Other possibilities include an incorrectly spelled name, a case filed in a different county, older records not available through the interface or a restricted proceeding. Public records are not the same as unrestricted internet access to every court document.

Opening an estate in Butler County, Ohio

How to find or deposit a will in Butler County

The court’s homepage offers a Wills on Deposit Search separate from its general probate record search. A will deposited with the court for safekeeping is not necessarily a will that has been admitted in a deceased person’s estate case.

Searching for a deposited will

Use the court’s official website to locate the Wills on Deposit Search. If you are researching the estate of someone who has died, check the public probate docket as well. The absence of a will in either search does not establish that the person never signed a private will.

Depositing an original will

Butler County provides instructions for depositing an original will and a related Certificate of Deposit of Will. Because the original is legally significant, follow the court’s current safekeeping rules and do not mail or alter the document without verifying the appropriate procedure.

Probating a will after death

When a will must be admitted to probate, the court may require Form BCPC 2.0, next-of-kin information, notice-related documents and other materials relevant to the estate. The court also provides forms concerning lost, spoliated or destroyed wills, but those situations can require additional legal proof.

The court provides online record search, marriage applications and payment tools. These features do not automatically establish a general e-filing process for every estate or guardianship case. Confirm the permitted filing method, required originals, signatures, notarization and cost deposit with the Probate Court before submission.

Butler County Probate Court fees in 2026

The court’s cost information separates initial deposits from individual document, service and later-case charges. An initial deposit is an advance toward court costs, not a guarantee of the total cost of administration. Postage, sheriff service and other expenses may be added when required.

Individual document charges are different

The 2026 court-cost information also lists separate charges associated with individual forms. Examples include $28 for an Application to Probate Will, $10 for an Application to Administer Estate and $83 for an Application to Relieve Estate. Marriage licenses are handled by the Probate Court, but the process is distinct from an estate or guardianship filing. The court’s current homepage states that marriage applications must be completed online and no marriage-license walk-ins are accepted after 3:30 p.m.

Adoption

Some older 2026 guides reference the Government Services Center at 315 High Street following the courthouse fire, including former temporary filing and hearing arrangements. The court’s more recent official homepage and General Information page list 101 High Street as the Probate Court location. Do not use an old 315 High Street notice as current travel guidance without checking with the court.

If you are arriving for marriage service, finish the online application before your visit and pay particular attention to the 3:30 p.m. walk-in limit. For estate filings, call first when the procedure requires an original will, certified evidence or specific payment method.
