Email and Fax Filing: What Mahoning Probate Allows
Mahoning County Probate Court is unusual compared with counties that rely only on a dedicated e-filing portal. Local Rule 57.1 allows qualifying pleadings to be sent electronically or by fax at the court’s discretion.

Documents requiring fees
A document requiring a filing fee can be rejected unless the sender uses the payment mechanism established by the court.
Initial estate with a will
Initial estate pleadings containing a Last Will and Testament, including codicils, are specifically excluded from electronic filing.
Transmission problems do not excuse a late filing. Confirm acceptance when a deadline matters.

These are common initial deposits from the current official fee schedule. A case can incur additional costs for service, publication, appraisers, copies or later filings.
General payment rule: the Probate Court fee page says court-cost deposits generally must be paid by cash, money order or similar guaranteed payment and that personal checks are not accepted. Particular departments, such as marriage-license services, have their own payment instructions.

Mahoning County Guardianship Requirements Worth Knowing
Guardianship is not just an appointment hearing. Mahoning’s current Local Rules impose application, background-check, inventory, reporting and accounting duties.
Applicant questionnaire
An application for guardian of an alleged incompetent generally must include the court’s Local Form 5.6 Applicant Questionnaire and required Ohio probate pleadings.
Background check
Guardian applicants generally must submit to a criminal background check unless the court waives it. Ohio attorneys may use a qualifying Certificate in Good Standing where the rule permits.
Medical privacy
Medical, psychological and related records of a ward are confidential and cannot be accessed without a court order.
Monthly budget
A guardian of the estate must file an application to establish a monthly budget or expend funds within 30 days after appointment when applicable.
Inventory
The guardian of the estate must file an inventory of the ward’s assets and income within three months of appointment.
Accounts and reports
Guardian accounts and required guardian reports generally continue on an annual cycle unless the court orders otherwise.
Mahoning County Marriage License Process
Mahoning County currently issues marriage licenses by appointment only, and appointments are conducted by video conference.

The issued marriage license remains valid for 60 days.

Ceremony proof
The court says proof of the completed ceremony must be returned within 30 days after completion.
Probate Copies, Certifications and Official Proof
A Tyler Odyssey search result helps locate a case, but it is not automatically the document a bank, title company, agency or other court needs.
Confidential files cannot simply be copied. Current Local Rule 55 says copying confidential records is prohibited and inspection requires prior court authorization.
Do Not Put Sensitive Identifiers in Public Probate Filings
Mahoning’s current Local Rule 45 requires parties to omit personal identifiers from public case documents.
Social Security numbers
Do not place a full Social Security number in a document available for public inspection except where the rules specifically require confidential submission.
Financial accounts
Financial-account identifiers, including debit, charge and credit-card numbers, are treated as personal identifiers.
Use the confidential form
When personal identifiers must be supplied to the court, use the designated confidential process rather than placing them into the public pleading.
Audio, Telephone and Video Probate Hearings
Mahoning’s 2026 Local Rules allow the judge, in the court’s discretion and upon motion, to conduct a hearing using audio, telephone or video conferencing.
Permission matters
Remote attendance should not be assumed. Follow the court’s order, hearing notice and any directions from the assigned judge or magistrate.
Send exhibits first
The current rules require exhibits for video-conference proceedings to be electronically transmitted to the court before the hearing.
Preserve confidentiality
