Copy the year, numeric file number and case suffix exactly as displayed.
Open Court Explorer
Select Probate and enter the case number. Probate Court Explorer search is case-number based.
Review the register of actions
Use the case information to identify filings, orders and other public docket activity available through the system.
Order the document if you need an actual copy
Court Explorer can be used to order eligible probate documents after the case has been identified.
Court Explorer is not the official court record itself. It also does not provide Probate Mental Health records, juvenile matters or PPO records.
Oakland County Probate Court E-Filing Rules
Oakland County Probate Court now requires MiFILE for case initiation and later filings in most probate matters.

Every filer using MiFILE must register. Creating an account is free.
11:59 p.m. rule
A filing submitted by 11:59 p.m. can receive that business day’s filing date. Weekend and holiday submissions move to the next business day.
3% transaction charge
Statutory filing fees paid through MiFILE are subject to the system’s 3% credit-card transaction fee.
MiFILE can generate proof of service
When electronic service is selected, the system can serve selected parties and generate a Proof of Service.
Submission can still be rejected
Check signatures, required boxes, supporting documents and blank or instructional pages before submitting.
E-Service room available
The Probate Court has an E-Service room for filers who cannot e-file from home or an office.
If MiFILE rejects a fee filing: the statutory filing fee is generally refunded, but the 3% transaction fee is non-refundable.

Probate Filings That Still Have Special Paper or In-Person Routes
Mandatory e-filing does not mean every Oakland probate task must be completed only through MiFILE.
Original wills
The physical original will is submitted by mail or in person rather than as an electronic original.
Small-estate assignment
Petition and Order for Assignment filings may be brought or mailed to Probate Court.
Inventory gross-estate fee
The gross-estate fee has special payment options, including in-person or mail procedures.
Emergency mental-health transport
Emergency Mental Health Transport Petitions are among the court’s stated e-filing exceptions.
Opening an Oakland County Probate Estate
Michigan estate administration can be informal or formal depending on the circumstances. Oakland Probate Court provides separate instructions and forms for estate-opening procedures.
Application route
An Application for Informal Probate and/or Appointment of Personal Representative carries a current basic filing fee of $175.
Petition route
A Petition for Probate and/or Appointment of Personal Representative also carries a current basic $175 filing fee.
Letters of Authority
Certified Letters of Authority are currently $12 each when issued after the required appointment documents are accepted.
Formal estate checklist: common opening material includes a death certificate, the will when applicable, MC 97/MC 97a protected-information forms, PC 559 and PC 565, with additional forms depending on the case.
Original Will Rule: 14 Days After Filing
Oakland County’s current MiFILE instructions contain an important rule for estates opened with a will.
E-file a copy of the will with the opening documents
The electronic estate filing is placed in a hold queue while the court waits for the original.
Deliver the original will within 14 days
The original may be mailed to Oakland County Probate Court or delivered in person at the Probate Counter.
Wait for the opening documents to be processed
After the original will is received, the held estate-opening documents can move forward for review.
Purchase Letters after acceptance
Once required appointment documents are accepted, eligible Letters of Authority can be purchased through Court Explorer.
If the original will is not received within the 14-day period, the estate filing can be rejected. A document submitted as an original that is actually a copy may also be returned.
Oakland’s official instructions say depositing the original will before the informal probate application may help the opening documents and Letters of Authority move faster.
Oakland County Petition for Assignment: $53,000 Threshold
Oakland County’s June 2026 Petition for Assignment instructions list a $53,000 small-estate amount for a death occurring in 2026 or later.
$53,000 threshold
Use the current court instructions because the statutory amount changes by date of death.
$25 petition fee
The Petition and Order for Assignment has a $25 filing fee plus the applicable Gross Estate / Inventory Fee.
$13 per certified Order
Current Oakland instructions list each certified copy of the Order for Assignment at $13.
Do not decide eligibility only from the $53,000 figure. Use the current Oakland instructions to calculate the estate correctly and document funeral expenses, assets and other required information.
Small-estate filings may be mailed or brought to Probate Court. The official page asks users to arrive by 4:00 p.m. for same-day processing.
Oakland Probate Inventory and Gross Estate Fee
Michigan estate administration can include a graduated Gross Estate Fee, also called the Inventory Fee. Oakland County provides an online calculator.
Inventory timing
In formal administration, Oakland’s guidance states that the inventory must generally be filed within 91 days after Letters of Authority are issued.
Graduated amount
The fee is based on the gross value used under Michigan probate rules rather than one flat fee for every estate.
Mortgage treatment
For qualifying real estate, mortgage liens may be deducted up to the value of that parcel for purposes of the fee calculation under the court’s stated rules.
